Back in February I was invited by Magmart to create a short piece based upon a sense that would be randomly assigned to me. I was given ‘taste’. Thoughts of creating a ‘The Pit and the Pendulum’ scenario ran through my head, but time was against me so I scaled it down and forgo actors. Some day, though, I will include that pit in a film. It’s too good of a set up to abandon.

Anyhow, I stayed along that path of enclosure and ordeal for the final piece. I also tried new methods and toys to create the visuals, such as a different type of latex molding and wax sculpting. All the mold making for ‘Seed to Son’ was so much fun that I am eagerly searching reasons and ways to make molds. Halloween, for example, will most definitely be kicked up a notch from now on. For ‘Epithelium’ I created a clay sculpture and made a latex molding out of it. Then the fun part came along when I poured hot wax into the molding. Would it withstand the temperature? Thankfully the molding was thick enough and no leaks occurred. But removing the mold was a different story. I’ll need to rethink my approach to using wax in complex molds. Not that I would use it that often, but this mold needed to melt and I figured wax would be appropriate and readily available.

One of the pleasures of taste is the grand variety of experiences available, if you’re willing to try. Although personally I often feel guilty of the experiences I enjoy, for it feels as if I am torturing and damaging the components required for this sense. But it doesn’t stop me.
